8 Steps for a Great Cloth Nappy Fit
How To Fit Your Cloth Nappy
Step 1: Position the Nappy
Lay your cloth nappy on your changing surface with the absorbent layer face up. Lay your baby on the nappy.
Step 2: Position the baby
Position the back of the nappy so it sits just above the bum, and the wings are level with or just below your baby’s belly button.
Step 3. Use the ‘Taco’ Method
Gently pull the front of the nappy up as high as it can go. Aim to almost reach the belly button. Some nappies fit lower, and some fit higher, based on the baby’s size and the nappy style.
The 'Taco Method’ is a common way to get the nappy and its layers to curve into the groin of the baby. Use your hand to cup the nappy and squash it into a taco shell shape.
Step 4. for a snap up nappy
Hold the wing above one thigh, and use your other hand to snap the hip snap (closest to the thigh). Repeat for the other side.
Now snap the waist snaps, if the nappy is a double row nappy. Some are single row and only have one row of snaps along the top of the nappy. You should have a small 1-2 finger gap under the baby’s belly button, to allow room for your baby to sit up.
*Note: Waist and Hip snaps do not need to be symmetrical. They can be tighter or looser on one side, as long as you are getting a fit you are happy with.
Step 4. for a hook and loop nappy
If you have a hook and loop closing nappy, this step is as simple as pull the wing over and secure the hook and loops across the front of the nappy.
You should have a small 1-2 finger gap under the baby’s belly button, to allow room for your baby to sit up.
Step 5. Adjust the leg gussets
Run your fingers along the leg gussets (elastics along the groin). As you do so, push the nappy elastics into the groin. You want them to sit where undies sit in the crease of the baby’s leg.
Step 6. Check for leg gaps
You want the gussets to fit securely against the baby’s legs to prevent leaks. If you find a gap, you may need to adjust the Rise snaps (the vertical rows of snaps on the front of a One Size Fits Most nappy). If your nappy is not a OSFM, and is sized, then you may have a nappy that is too big.
Step 7. Adjust the Rise Snaps
If you need to, snap up the rises. The rises adjust the ‘sag’ of the nappy. You want the nappy to have the least sag and fit snugly (like undies), but you don’t want the wings to cut into the top of your baby’s thighs.
Step 8. Push the extra fabric up!!
The last step is IMPORTANT. If you have snapped the rise snaps, you need to use your fingers and push the fabric up! If it folds down, it can cause leaks. You want the extra fabric fold caused by the rise snaps to point UP towards your baby’s belly button.
That’s it, your nappy is good to go!
